Cloth Diapers
Things I use for Cloth Diapering
Not as convenient, but doable and saves a ton of money!
Cloth Diapering
I really enjoy cloth diapering. Yes, there are some moments where it got a little gross, but you can figure out a good system where it is really doable. And you will save thousands of dollars! It has been worth it for me. If you choose the more economical ones then it will cost you about $300-$600 dollars the first year. It will cost you over a thousand to buy disposables. But it gets even better because the second child you have it will only cost you to wash them...and if you plan on having lots of babies...well you get the idea.
I'm not a total die hard. I use disposables at night and when we go out or are travelling. But it still saves lots of money. I'll show you what I do just to give you some ideas but everyone likes to do things differently. This is all you'll need though but you'll be amazed at all the different options and choices out there. If you want to spend more money they have ones that are more convenient like All In Ones. Click on the pictures below and it will take you to sites with more info.
1. Diaper Covers: These go over the prefold diapers I have. I have the Bummis Super Snap. They are about $13 each but you only need 6 or so of them depending what size you are in. They come in lots of cute patterns. I chose to get a neutral in case the Lord every gives us a girl someday. (We would really like that, Lord...) Click on the picture for a link to a store.
2. Prefolds: The things that go inside the diapers. They are $15 for a dozen. I recommend getting them online rather than at Meijer. These ones are better quality and absorb better. (or so I've heard) They also have a really neat thing called "Snappi" that you can use during the first 6 months so you never have to use pins.
3. Diaper Pail and Liner: These are what you put the dirty diapers in. I just used an old garbage can that had a revolving lid and put the liner in it. Then when it is is full you just take out the liner with the diapers in it and dump them in the washing machine. I put a drop of Lavender Essential Oil in it to help with the smell.
4. Diaper Liners: These go inside the diapers on top of the prefolds when your baby starts having solid foods. They are not necessary but I highly recommend them. They catch the pooh so you just remove the liner with the pooh on it and dump that in the toilet. It saves you from having to get the pooh off of the diaper (not a fun job!).
5. Travel Bag: A Bag to put your dirty cloth diapers in when you're not at home and on the go.
6. Cloth Wipes: They are nice because you can just leave them in the diaper and then throw it all in your diaper pail. These are some that you can buy. I actually made my own out of flannel material that I had leftover from making stuff for the nursery. I just cut and then serge the edges. I don't use cloth wipes all the time. The rest of the time I use some natural disposable ones but I rip them in half so they last longer.
7. Garment Extenders: These help your babies clothes fit better since the cloth diapers can be so big. ;) The reviews on this site are not good but I haven't had a problem with them. I can usually always find one of the sizes to fit.
